October Rose Video

It's been quite a busy and creative summer into autumn. The latest release is a video for "October Rose", which came together within the space of a week, last day of filming on Friday and released on Saturday. We'd imagined the video like this for a few years but hadn't got round to it.

The song itself was written in 2005, with some different lyrics, and was eventually released on the album '2020' back in 2020. Like a lot of my songs, there are often multiple layers or meanings going on simultaneously. However, the core theme running through it is about how we chase things outside of ourselves - whether that's relationships, money, possessions, status - only to eventually realise what we were really looking for was within us all along.

Before working on this video, at the end of summer, we put out an acoustic outdoor performance of the entire SoulJahm 'Sketches Of Europa' album. In an era when nobody can do anything without technology invading a major part of it, it felt nice to just play and sing in a simplistic setting, with the bare minimum technology necessary to capture the performance. Sounds odd to say this, because I grew up doing it this way, but I'm especially pleased I managed to remember the words (and most of the chords!) for the whole album without the aid of a phone!
