About

What makes David William special? It is not the usual impressive milestones of a music career that make David stand out from crowd. There are no tours to boast of, no magnificent venues played, no certificates or awards received, no impressive quotes about him uttered from the mouths of high ranking music execs. What does make him different, however, is the fact that he doesn’t consider this a failure.

The reason David has no ordinary biography is simply that he has had no ordinary life. Early into his music journey he realised that his path was that of independence rather than one leading into the industry. He has pursued this path of independence ever since and doesn’t seek validation from an industry he knows to be corrupt at the core and which so many musicians have fallen prey to in the past. For David, to avoid the pitfalls is the best way to honour those who paved the way and inspired him.

Instead, it is the muse that guides his every action and dictates the course of his life, wherever this may lead him. David represents a kind of authenticity that is hard to come by in this increasingly artificial world of ours. His work is as pure as can be. Sometimes poppy, sometimes psychedelic, sometimes polished, sometimes raw, but always inspired.

There is a constant however; the backbone of all his musical endeavours are skilfully crafted songs. He may have had to work on his musical abilities over the years to get to where he is now, but strangely, he came out of the womb a complete songwriter. As soon as he could strum a chord, and well before he had really mastered his guitar or his voice, he was writing classic pop melodies that I still consider to be among his best work. Gradually, the rest of his musical abilities caught up, however, and as he was able to execute his ideas better his albums got closer to the visions he had for them in his head. The body of work resulting from this process is extraordinarily varied. Unfazed by trends or commercial success, David isn’t afraid to explore new territory and time and again manages to create something completely unique, while still retaining a classic, timeless quality.

It should be noted that his wish to make music independently does by no means indicate a lack of dedication to his craft. For better or worse, David made Music his life a long time ago and has stuck to this commitment ever since, despite the seemingly infertile cultural breeding ground our society has created for new artists breaking through.

When he creates he feels that it is not really him doing it, but rather that the creativity is flowing through him, as though channelled from some other dimension. This perhaps explains why he is so driven and tireless in bringing this Music through. It is a job he feels was given to him, not one he chose, and therefore, he trusts, there must be listeners ready to receive it.

I, at least, know that discovering David’s Music has changed my life. We are used to seeing creative genius doing what it does on the world stage, but it is not every day we get the privilege to see it unfold in front of our very eyes. Stumbling upon such a gem is a rare privilege, and I’m only sorry for those people who will regret not having spotted it sooner.

The process of making his music and sharing it with the world has not always been easy for David, not least because promoting himself and singing his own praises goes against his nature and is something he doesn’t generally feel too comfortable with. He would much rather just make his music and put it out there for people to find and connect with, than talk about it. Yet we live in a culture that demands it of artists to shout for attention as loudly as they can, to be persuasive salesmen as well as creatives. And if there is one thing I can say for certain about David, it is that he is a musician first and everything else second. It is this dedication and intensity that has both slowed him down in certain ways, but also given him the strength to carry on in the face of at times great adversity. To quote a line from his song Boots: 'You thought I’d go away, but I am here to stay'
