"Karl-Marx-Allee" is one of the first SoulJahm songs to come into being. Shortly after acquiring our instruments in Vienna, February 2011, we headed to Budapest the following month. Two brand new songs came very quickly and effortlessly within the space of a few days - "Suzanne" and "Karl-Marx-Allee".

The song documents our first winter in Berlin staying in various apartments in Friedrichshain where Karl-Marx-Allee is the main boulevard running through the area and which we'd have to make many long walks through the snow and "freezing cold".

Later in the year when we reached Milan, we began creating this 'Sketches of Europa' version and recorded the piano tracks building the rest of the song around them. In Nice a month later ukulele, maracas and handclaps were recorded in a tiny, sweatbox of an apartment! The complete opposite of the environment the song speaks of. The drum track was put together in an apartment we stayed in for 3 days in Paris while we were going through one of our chaotic periods and our cases were beginning to fall apart.

Melodica was recorded in Budapest during the summer of 2012 and finally the vocals were put down in Bologna just after Christmas 2012 before the song was mixed in Ventimiglia.
